Process Overview For ETP:

 

  • Screening/ Grit chamber: To remove floatable matter and sand, grit, stones in raw effluent.
  • Oil & grease trap: To remove floatable oil and grease from raw effluent.
  • Primary treatment: Includes chemical treatment (coagulation, flocculation, neutralization) and solid-liquid separation for removal of suspended solids.
  • Secondary Treatment: Includes biological treatment for reduction of BOD/COD and solid-liquid separation. Biological treatment can be aerobic or anaerobic depends on quality of raw effluent. Aerobic- ASP (Activated Sludge Process), MBBR/FAB (Moving Bed Bioreactor/ Fluidized Aerated Bioreactor), SAFF (Submerged Aerated Fixed Film Bioreactor), MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) Anaerobic- UASB (Up-flow anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor)

Industrial wastewater treatment describes the processes used for treating wastewater that is produced by industries as an undesirable by-product. After treatment, the treated industrial wastewater (or effluent) may be reused or released to a sanitary sewer or to a surface water in the environment. Some industrial facilities generate wastewater that can be treated in sewage treatment plants. Most industrial processes, such as petroleum refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants have their own specialized facilities to treat their wastewaters so that the pollutant concentrations in the treated wastewater comply with the regulations regarding disposal of wastewaters into sewers or into rivers, lakes or oceans.  This applies to industries that generate wastewater with high concentrations of organic matter (e.g. oil and grease), toxic pollutants (e.g. heavy metals, volatile organic compounds) or nutrients such as ammonia.  Some industries install a pre-treatment system to remove some pollutants (e.g., toxic compounds), and then discharge the partially treated wastewater to the municipal sewer system.
Most industries produce some wastewater. Recent trends have been to minimize such production or to recycle treated wastewater within the production process. Some industries have been successful at redesigning their manufacturing processes to reduce or eliminate pollutants. Sources of industrial wastewater include battery manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, electric power plants, food industry, iron and steel industry, metal working, mines and quarries, nuclear industry, oil and gas extraction, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, pulp and paper industry, smelters, textile mills, industrial oil contamination, water treatment and wood preserving. Treatment processes include brine treatment, solids removal (e.g. chemical precipitation, filtration), oils and grease removal, removal of biodegradable organics, removal of other organics, removal of acids and alkalis, and removal of toxic materials.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a treatment process designed to remove all the liquid waste from a system. The focus of ZLD is to reduce wastewater economically and produce clean water that is suitable for reuse (e.g. irrigation), thereby saving money and being beneficial to the environment. ZLD systems employ advanced wastewater/desalination treatment technologies to purify and recycle virtually all of the wastewater produced.

Also ZLD technologies help plants meet discharge and water reuse requirements, enabling businesses to:

  • Meet stringent government discharge regulations

  • Reach higher water recovery (%)

  • Treat and recover valuable materials from the wastewater streams, such as potassium sulfate, caustic soda, sodium sulfate, lithium and gypsum

The conventional way to reach ZLD is with thermal technologies such as evaporators (multi stage flash (MSF), multi effect distillation (MED) and mechanical vapor compression (MCV)) and crystallizers and recover their condensate. Thus, ZLD plants produce solid waste.

Effluent can be treated in a number of different ways depending on the level of treatment required. These levels are known as preliminary, primary, secondary and tertiary (or advanced). The mechanism for treatment is divided into three categories: Physical, chemical and biological.

Preliminary Treatment.

·         Preliminary treatment removes in-organic materials and insoluble organic pollutants (i.e., large organic suspended solid matter, grit, O& G) that can be easily collected from the effluent and can damage or clog the pumps or skimmers of primary treatment clarifiers.

·          All preliminary treatments consist of physical separation techniques by controlling flow rate of effluents. Units in Preliminary Treatment, Screens, Scrapers, Aeration

Primary Treatment It consists of temporarily holding the sewage in an inert basin where heavy solids can settle to the bottom where oil, grease and lighter solids float to the surface. The settled material go for sludge treatment in sludge digesters and floating materials are skimmed off and the remaining liquid is passes to secondary treatment. At this stage, over 70% of the suspended solids and 40% of the BOD is removed from the effluent,

·         Secondary Treatment biological treatment of effluent removes dissolved and suspended organic (bio-degradable) matters by consuming food and convert it into new cell mass, energy and CO2.,Most common micro-organisms are bacteria (aerobic or anaerobic), protozoa and rotifers, least common fungi and algae. This treatment removes almost 70- 90% of BOD and 80- 90% of dissolved solids from effluent. The under flow from the clarifier and the secondary clarifier having a sludge consistency of around 1-1.5% is pumped into the centrifuge for dewatering.
